DC Universe’s new Co-Ceo, James Gun, is reshaping the media franchise. As they envision the future of the troubled DC Extended Universe, new DC CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran want to cause a major upheaval. The main changes, according to the report of The Hollywood Reporter, include canceling the already confirmed Wonder Woman 3 and stopping the Aquaman series after the second movie, which is scheduled for next year.

Gunn and Safran want to wrap up the DCEU as it was started by filmmaker Zack Snyder ten years ago, which likely entails recasting the lead roles. With the more colorful Aquaman flicks, Shazam! and Birds of Prey, Warner Bros was already trying to separate itself from Snyder’s grim vision for the brand. However, most films still used the core group that Snyder had established.

Superheros of DC
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), a reboot of the Batman film series, came after Man of Steel (2013), the first entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Suicide Squad (2016), Wonder Woman (2017), Justice League (2017; Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a director’s edit of the movie, came out in 2021), Aquaman (2018), Shazam! (2019), Birds of Prey (2020), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), The Suicide Squad (2021), and Black Adam came out after these movies (2022). Along with other movies in various stages of development, future movies include Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman, and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. HBO’s streaming service was added to the DCEU, expanding it to include television series.

The DCEU has made approximately $6.1 billion at the international box office, making it the ninth-highest-grossing movie series. The company’s highest-grossing movie, Aquaman, made over $1.15 billion globally, making it the most successful DC Comics-based movie to date.
The reason behind DC’s cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 & other films
Within a week, Gunn and Safran anticipate pitching their ideas to WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav. At this point, fans will better understand the direction of the DCEU.
According to THR, the Wonder Woman 3 film won’t be a part of the future vision, Safran and Gunn informed Wonder Woman director and star Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot last week. That came after Jenkins produced a third film’s plot summary. GalGadot thanked fans for supporting Wonder Woman in an unprompted tweet last week and promised a movie they’d all enjoy.
A few years ago it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman.I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU.The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you🙅🏻♀️🙌🏼💃🏻♥️ pic.twitter.com/XlzhrMx4xe

Similarly, Dwayne Johnson tweeted in opposition to claims that his most recent movie, Black Adam, cost WB over $50 million. THR reports that WB isn’t pursuing a Black Adam sequel either, but Johnson maintained that the movie effectively paved the way for a new era in the franchise.
Johnson did everything possible to promote Black Adam, underperforming with less than $400 million worldwide against a reported budget of $200 million.
Waited to confirm with financiers before I shared this excellent #BlackAdam news – our film will PROFIT between $52M-$72M.

Fact.
At almost $400M worldwide we are building our new franchise step by step (first Captain America did $370M) for the DC future.https://t.co/GBIgsbtnkq
The THR report suggests that the figure may be even higher — and was advertised with the promise of establishing a future confrontation between Black Adam and Superman. After years of absence, Henry Cavill was called back for a cameo and revealed that he would be playing the role again. However, THR reported that while WB began preparing a Man of Steel sequel.

According to THR, Jason Momoa, who played Lobo in Aquaman, will probably have a new role. Gunn recently published a photo of Lobo on Twitter, while Momoa recently shared a video expressing joy about securing a character he has long been eyeing.
Director Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which has a spinoff series and sequel features in development, is the only series that Gunn and Safran won’t touch. Todd Philip’s The Joker, which may have a sequel, both fall beyond the purview of the DC Extended Universe.
